Sundance Summer Theatre Presents “Newsies”

An Inspiring Tale of Justice for the Underdog

This summer, the iconic Sundance Summer Theatre presents “Newsies,” a vibrant and inspiring musical that brings the historic Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City to life. From July 18 to August 10, audiences can immerse themselves in the tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy who leads his fellow newsies in a fight for justice against powerful newspaper publishers. Join us on the mountain this summer for a thrilling experience filled with dynamic songs, compelling characters, and a storyline that celebrates solidarity and the power of the underdog.

A Rich Tradition at Sundance

Since 1970, Sundance Summer Theatre has been enchanting audiences with its outdoor productions set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Timpanogos. Paired with an incomparable BBQ dinner, an evening at the Sundance Summer Theatre with your loved ones is a night to remember!

An outdoor concert with people seated on grass and bleachers, enjoying a performance in a natural amphitheater surrounded by lush green mountains under a twilight sky.

The theatre, produced in partnership with Utah Valley University since 2008, has brought beloved classics like “The Sound of Music,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Mamma Mia” to life. This year’s production of “Newsies” continues this tradition of excellence, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and professional theatre that has become a hallmark of Sundance Summer Theatre.

An Inspiring Story Based on Real Events

Based on real events, “Newsies” tells the story of the newsboys and newsgirls who, despite facing significant challenges, stood up against the exploitation by newspaper publishers. The central character, Jack Kelly, embodies the spirit of rebellion and leadership as he unites the newsies in their quest for fair treatment. The musical’s energetic score and choreography bring to life the excitement and urgency of their struggle in this timeless tale of courage and determination.

Celebrating the Role of Newsgirls

While “Newsies” primarily focuses on the male newsboys, our production also recognizes the crucial role played by newsgirls during the same period. Historian Autumn Linford’s book, “Extra! A History of America’s Girl Newsies,” sheds light on these often-overlooked figures. Linford, a media, gender, and labor historian, discovered through her research that many young girls were also selling newspapers on the streets, facing even harsher conditions due to their gender.

Linford’s work aims to add the stories of these resilient young girls back into the historical narrative. Through diaries, letters, and oral histories, she has uncovered the spirited, sometimes tragic, lives of these newsgirls who, like their male counterparts, were integral to the newspaper industry but often exploited and endangered.

This summer’s production at Sundance Resort will feature newsgirls alongside newsboys, honoring their contribution and ensuring a more inclusive retelling of this pivotal moment in history.
