Visiting Artist - Alison Spencer
Alison Hill Spencer has been birding and drawing for as long as she can remember. Growing up, her dad led the family on adventures around the world to hunt for birds with their binoculars—and then encouraged her to draw their favorite ones. After their family moved west, they’d often visit the wetlands surrounding Utah’s lakes to watch the shorebirds, pelicans, eagles and osprey, ducks and herons, and, on still winter nights, owls. Today, Alison’s dad is 80, but they still head out every week to enjoy the birds of Utah.
Through her bird portraits, Alison hopes to spark curiosity about the lands and waterways that sustain our local ecosystems, and a love for the birds we share them with. She believes that as people learn about local birds, they’ll be encouraged to be better stewards.
Alison graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Utah Valley University. She currently divides her time between painting and teaching. You can learn more about her work and the birds she paints on Instagram @alisonhspencerart or on her website at alisonhspencerart.com.
Artist demonstration will be from 12pm-3pm July 11 at the Art Studio (new location in Creekside Building). Alison Spencer's show will be up from the July 11 to Aug 7.
