The Sundance Resort Story

Where art, nature, and play come together in one place.

Welcome to a place cultivated to be much more than a resort. It’s a getaway, to be sure—a place with adventure and leisure in equal measure. Yet something special happens here. Time slows down, the senses perk up. Curiosity sparks.

Sundance Mountain Resort is even more about what’s been preserved than what’s been built. Our lodging, lifts, art studios, galleries, restaurants, bar, and amenities are invaluable not only because of their inherent beauty and taste—but also because of the open canvas of fresh forest and mountain air surrounding them.

A story with as many twists and turns as the mountain itself

This is a place beloved and stewarded by untold generations—each individual with their own story of what makes this mountain so special, their own role in a greater epic. First, the land’s original Ute inhabitants cared for their ancestral lands, then the Stewart family set up their summer homestead here.

One day in 1961, Robert Redford, who was just beginning his career as an actor, took a ride up Provo Canyon in Utah’s Wasatch range. He was spellbound by the area’s beauty and soon purchased land to build a small cabin for himself and his family—a far cry from Hollywood, but where he felt most at home.

By 1968, as his film career grew, he purchased thousands of acres, intent on turning the small local ski hill into something more than a resort—something for artists, dreamers, a place people could come to be inspired by nature. He was determined that this place should be “developed a little, preserved a lot.”

Under the leadership of Bob (as he insisted on being called around the resort), Sundance Resort then blossomed as a haven for the arts, a place to immerse in nature, a source of local pride and play. From early filmmaking workshops in the streamside Screening Room to the unmistakable vocals of Willie Nelson on the outdoor amphitheater stage and the monthly artist-in-residence at our Art Studio and Gallery to this day, creativity will always have a home here. By pairing that creativity with wellness, outdoor play, and of course ample fresh air, this is a place where people come to feel different. Where they leave with a bigger smile than the one they brought in.

Sundance Mountain Resort today is the culmination of all the caretaking and community that have brought it to this present moment.

If you plant a root deep enough in the ground, what grows will inspire others to come.
