The Art Studio & Gallery rotates its exhibits every four weeks, highlighting the work of Utah artists. On the first Saturday of each new exhibit, the artist will be in the studio demonstrating their creative process from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, we’ve expanded our Visiting Artist program throughout the resort to include a Quarterly Visiting Artist at the Spa and in the hallway between the General Store and the Deli.
Colter May // April 26 – June 6
Live Artist Demonstration // April 26
In the quiet of the studio, I find myself drawn to the unexpected. My process is messy, instinctual, and always evolving—less about control, more about discovery. I work with raw materials like fine sand, natural clay, and charcoal, not because they’re easy, but because they’re unpredictable. They crack, crumble, shift—and in doing so, they mirror the landscapes I’m trying to understand.
I think a lot about the early explorers of the American West—how they stepped into unfamiliar terrain with little more than curiosity and grit. My work is rooted in that same spirit. Every painting is an expedition. I experiment with layering, texture, and pressure until something reveals itself. The surfaces become rough, weathered, almost geological, inviting not just to the eye, but to the hands. These pieces aren’t meant to sit behind glass; they’re meant to be felt.
To me, painting isn’t about perfection. It’s about pushing into the unknown and letting the materials speak. The result is something ancient and contemporary all at once.
McKenzie Paxton // June 7 – July 4
McKenzie S. Paxton, an artist born and raised in Elk Ridge, Utah, developed a deep connection with the mountains that shaped both her childhood and her art. Growing up in a picturesque canyon in southern Utah County, McKenzie was immersed in nature from an early age. Her father, an avid outdoorsman, introduced her to the wonders of the mountains through hunting, hiking, and skiing. Her grandfather, a snowcat driver at Deer Valley, further instilled her love for the winter landscapes, and her earliest ski memories include racing down the bunny hill slopes of Deer Valley.
For McKenzie, the natural world is a constant source of inspiration. Driving through the valleys and canyons of Utah, she developed an eye for the changing light and the way it transforms the land. This fascination led her to make the study and painting of landscapes her life’s work. In the winter, McKenzie captures the energy of skiers gliding down slopes at Western U.S. resorts, while in the summer, she focuses on the local mountains and landscapes surrounding her home. When she can find time away from her two young daughters, McKenzie often paints en plein air, connecting directly with the environment that inspires her.
All artist demonstrations are from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on the first Saturday of their show dates. Each exhibit is on display until the next artist begins.
