Visiting Artist: Catherine Downing

Come see a live demonstration from our Visiting Artist, Catherine Downing, Saturday from 12-5pm. Her show is titled “To Be As We Are“

Images have power. They can function as “living moments” calling us to a truer experience of our world. An image strong enough to take root in the psyche will shift us in some small or large way in that direction. Images that make “our minds remember” connect us back to ourselves.

Agnes Martin, the great Minimalist painter once wrote, “To live and work by inspiration you have to stop thinking. You have to hold your mind still in order to hear clearly.”

Waiting for inspiration is the hardest part. To be present, to sink into that unlimited space inside, to feel what needs to come next in the painting takes patient solitude. To be focused in this way allows me to continue painting my life as I feel it to be.

Ultimately my work is about experience, individual ways of perceiving, and the internal shifts that occur as we look or dream or travel through the spaces of our lives. I hope that at least some of these pieces are present enough to become “living moments” for any that want to engage.
