Sundance Resort Prepares for its 2008-2009 Winter Season Opening on Dec. 12th, Check out Sundance Resort in the current issue of SKI Magazine

SUNDANCE, UTAH (December, 2008)—Sundance Resort, currently featured in the December 08 SKI Magazine, is set to open on December 12th for the 2008-2009 winter sports season. Despite a flagging economy, season pass sales have surpassed last year‘s record sales. Locals are taking advantage of all that Sundance has to offer right in their own backyard.

“In a troubled economy people want the most out of every dollar they spend and Sundance delivers a great value, convenience and experience that is unsurpassed,” commented Czar Johnson, Village Mountain Sports Director.

As temperatures fall and snow begins falling in Provo Canyon, Sundance is helping mother nature along with its snowmaking capacity to insure that the opening will be all that Sundance skiers and riders expect.

“It’s invigorating, even in these troubled economic times that people will still participate in what they love to do. Our skiers and snowboarders love the sport. We feel fortunate to be able to offer these passionate guests three vital decision points, time and convenience with our close proximity to Utah Valley, a great price, and value with an excellent product,” commented Jerry Warren, Director of Mountain Operations. “People love the experience that Sundance offers. This means more time on the mountain and as staff at Sundance, we look forward to sharing this passion with our guests.”

Cross Country Center

The Sundance winter experience would not be complete without a visit to the Sundance Cross Country Center, which offers the rare combination of a backcountry wilderness experience, wide, groomed trails and dedicated snowshoe trails. Just a mile and a half beyond the Sundance base area, the Cross Country Center when fully open offers 19 km of trails groomed for skating and traditional skiing and 10km of designated snowshoe trails. The Sundance Cross Country Center is led by a staff of fully certified PSIA instructors, offers coaching for everyone from novice to experienced skiers striving to perfect their technique. Cross Country hours are daily from 9am-5pm. The trail fee is $14 for a full day or $6 after 2pm. Children under 12 and seniors over 65 are free. Call 801-223-4170 for more information on Cross Country activities.

Sundance Avalanche Dog Program

The Sundance dog teams are a critical component of the Sundance Ski Patrol Snow Safety Program. Keeping avalanche terrain on the Sundance ski area safe for skiers and snowboarders is one of the Sundance ski patrol’s most important jobs. Utah’s Wasatch Mountains are known for their abundance of light powder snow and easy access to the steeps. Within the ski area, ski patrollers monitor slope conditions, hazards and weather. The ski patrol needs to be consistently aware of their surroundings and make safe decisions for themselves and others. Assisting the patrol in this work is a crew of well-trained avalanche dogs, a vital part of the patrols quiver of snow safety equipment.

The Sundance trained avalanche dogs use their keen sense of smell to locate avalanche victims buried under the snow. A person’s best chance of survival in an avalanche is a speedy rescue from within the victim’s group. Hopefully each member of the party is wearing an avalanche transceiver and has the knowledge to act quickly. Unfortunately, quite often this is not the case.
