SUNDANCE, UTAH (March, 2010)—The Sundance Summer Theatre presents the Tony award winning musical, Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in partnership with Utah Valley University, on the Eccles Outdoor Stage at Sundance Resort, July 30th-August 20th. The play will be directed by Elizabeth Hansen, whose extensive work in film, television and theatre has resulted in numerous awards including a Writer’s Guild Award, an EMMY award nomination and Humanitas Prize finalist for the CBS Schoolbreak Special for American Eyes.
“Three years ago, the Sundance Resort brought back the eagerly awaited Sundance Summer Theatre. Each year since, the Summer Theatre has grown in popularity. We are happy to continue our partnership with Utah Valley University to bring this new production to the outdoor stage for what promises to be another successful year. We are especially excited to bring this award winning musical, Big River, to Sundance. The story of Huck, Jim and Tom’s adventures along the mighty Mississippi is a classic. To see it told in such a spectacular setting makes it even more special,” commented Chad Linebaugh, Sundance General Manager.
"Big River" the story of Huck Finn and Jim rafting the mighty Mississip' is about as all American a show as you can get. With the beautiful outdoor setting at Sundance and the coproduction between UVU Theatre and Sundance, this is bound to be a beautiful summer in the mountains!” commented James Arrington, Chairman, The Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage and Screen, Utah Valley University.
The play ran for over 1,000 performances on Broadway, maintaining a truly American voice in the midst of the British musicals of the late 1980s. The bluegrass and country style music of the play exemplifies its Americana themes, with the music and lyrics written by Roger Miller.
The production of Big River will appear against the backdrop of Mt. Timpanogos, beginning on July 30th and ending with a final performance on August 20th; performances will be held each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights over these dates.
